South Caicos has got to be one of the most tranquil “off-the-grid” destinations on the planet. This secluded island is the perfect tropical getaway – especially during the tail end of winter when the weather on South Caicos is ideal with temperatures hovering in the mid to high 70’s to the low 80’s, the balmy Caribbean breeze keeping things comfortably cool. Humidity was non-existent.
From the Bay Area, a flight from SFO to Miami was a quick five hours and then an additional two-hour flight from Miami directly to South Caicos.
THE ISLAND
South Caicos is located in the southeastern part of the Turks and Caicos archipelago. Once upon a time, South Caicos was a major producer of salt and the main settlement, Cockburn Harbour, was a busy trading hub with ships transporting salt to North America and Europe. Today, Cockburn Harbour is a quiet fishing village, and South Caicos is known as the “Fishing Capital” of the Turks and Caicos.
The vibe is relaxed and low-key with old-world charm and rustic architecture. You won’t find big resorts, rowdy nightlife, or theme parks on the island, instead, you can enjoy the island’s natural beauty and activities like bone fishing, whale watching, kayaking, and scuba diving.
One of the coolest things to do is kayak to the middle of the ocean and hunt for sand dollars and admire the huge starfish in the shallow waters – so shallow that you can walk in the middle of the ocean miles away from shore. Yup, that was pretty cool.
Another interesting excursion is to take a boat ride to Iguana Island and visit with hundreds of iguanas. The lizards aren’t shy (especially since we brought sandwiches to share) and they were bold enough to approach us. I’m not fond of lizards in general, but these guys were kind of cute.
The island is quite underdeveloped and the unpaved road to and from the resorts is a bumpy ride, but that only adds to the island’s charm. Donkeys roam wild on the island and flamingos can be seen lolling near the old salt ponds.

WHERE TO STAY
Choosing a place to stay in South Caicos is easy as there are only two resorts. My stay was at Sailrock South Caicos which is a gorgeous property that sits uniquely between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. This is the only resort where you can enjoy a view of the Atlantic Ocean on one side and frolic in the calm blue waters of the Caribbean Sea on the other.
The property offers luxurious Ridgetop Suites and Beachfront Villas. The suites are elevated above the shoreline and offer views of the Atlantic Ocean while the villas sit steps from the beach with direct access to the Atlantic.
I stayed in a gorgeous three-bedroom suite featuring a beautifully furnished living room, a fully appointed kitchen, a dining room with seating for at least eight people, two primary suites – each with a garden shower and tub, and a third smaller bedroom and additional bathroom, and a laundry room with washer and dryer. But the most spectacular thing about the villa was the backyard with its swimming pool and fantastic ocean view. From the back patio is a path that leads to the beach. And the view from the villa was, needless to say, stunning. I made good use of the pool and the hammock in my private backyard paradise. A daily morning walk on the beach at sunrise was one of my favorite pastimes during my getaway.
Besides the luxurious suites and villas, the resort has a lot to offer. There are tennis and pickleball courts, basketball courts, beach combing, kayaking, yoga & meditation, and Hobie Cats. And of course, for those who want pure relaxation, there are beach loungers and hammocks all along the white sand beach.
For the ultimate in relaxation, book a massage. The resort has a comprehensive Spa & Wellness program. The massage rooms are set on a hill with a beautiful view. Enjoy the breeze blowing gently over you as you decompress under the hands of your expert masseuse. Tip: Request a massage with EKO – not only does he instruct the yoga classes in the morning, but he gives excellent massages too!

WHERE TO EAT
Being that Sailrock South Caicos was a bumpy ride to town and there are only a few restaurants in town anyway, dining at the resort was the best option. Luckily, the two dining options at Sailrock are excellent and we had no desire to dine elsewhere.
Breakfast was always at The Great House where there was a selection of tasty and healthy breakfast options.
Lunch and dinner were always at The Cove, the beachfront restaurant where the delicious food is served with a tranquil view. I recommend always choosing the seafood options –the island of South Caicos is the “Fishing Capital” after all, and dishes like the fish tacos, the daily ceviche (the conch ceviche is the best I’ve ever had), the conch fritters (!), and any other seafood offering will never disappoint.
On our final evening, we had the thrill of enjoying a private chef dining experience in the villa. This is offered to guests who prefer to dine in. The meal was absolutely delicious: a beautiful salad, roasted carrots, fish and lobster, steak, potato wedges, and a rich chocolate cake, all prepared by a private chef and served by a small crew. It was special.
Most of the food on the island is imported from the other larger islands, but the resort does grow a few fruits and vegetables. For families who want to make good use of the well-appointed kitchens, groceries can be ordered pre-arrival, and the resort will stock your fridge and pantry.
HOME SWEET HOME AWAY FROM HOME
Sailrock South Caicos is a remarkable resort, and the island is truly an escape from the hustle and bustle of reality. It’s ideal for families, retirees, and couples who want a romantic getaway. If you fall in love with it, like I did, you may consider buying a piece of heaven. Sailrock South Caicos offers real estate opportunities where visitors can purchase one of the villas for sale (including the beautiful three-bedroom I stayed in), a Ridgetop condo, or an elite custom villa. If ownership isn’t viable, you can always spend a few days at Sailrock South Caicos – owners do offer their suites and villas to guests.
