The Flamingo Resort & Spa

The Flamingo Resort & Spa
Santa Rosa, California

It’s always a good time to explore what is near and accessible by automobile. Lucky for us, California is a gorgeous state, and the Bay Area is actually quite close to many unexplored cities and towns which can be reached within a couple of hours by car.

Santa Rosa, with its proximity to romantic wine country as well as its plethora of family-friendly activities, is a great option if you are looking for a weekend of romance or a family getaway.

Most recently, we had the opportunity to visit the Flamingo Resort in Santa Rosa which has recently undergone a remarkable transformation, turning the 1950’s property into a dazzling display of contemporary design, while still maintaining a glitzy, yet casual mid-century vibe.

From the cooler than cool mural in the lobby to the sculptural art outside, there is a good appreciation of modern art which lends a cutting-edge punch, mixed with throw-back black & white photos displaying 50’s sophisticated glamour, to the decor. The newly revamped rooms feature mid-century and vintage touches – think bamboo settees, velvet poufs and cut out walls, and small details like vintage alarm clocks and telephones. The details are sleek and chic from gold bathroom fixtures to the stylish tea kettles and super comfy platform beds.

Other perks include a huge pool and access to the on-site spa and fitness center at Montecito Heights, where there are tennis courts, a full gym, yoga classes, and massage and facial treatments. Hotel guests have free access to classes but make sure to book ahead as the classes fill up.

The hotel is located on 4th Street in the heart of town, close to trails, shops, and restaurants. And Santa Rosa is near wine country minus the pricey hotels and heavy tourist crowds.

Fun things to do in Santa Rosa:

Charles M. Schulz Museum

Check out the artwork of Charles M. Schulz, creator of the Peanuts comic strip at the Charles M. Schulz Museum. Peruse the vast collection of Schulz’s works and memorabilia then explore the grounds where you will find an outdoor Snoopy Labyrinth, sculptures, the Museum Theater, and the Warm Puppy Café. And right next door is the Sonoma County Children’s Museum, so if you’re traveling with the kids, a visit to both museums is a great addition to your itinerary.

Safari West

Go on a safari! Safari West is a 400-acre park where you will see such exotic animals as giraffes, cheetahs,  and rhinos making this another fun family activity. Book a private adventure, take a tour, or participate in a variety of workshops. Check online for ongoing events.

Trione-Annadel State Park

With over 40-miles of hiking trails and featuring wildflowers and a lake, this park is a favorite among hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. There are picnic and camp grounds, and fishing at the lake – an ideal spot for nature lovers.

Wine Country & More

Santa Rosa is the largest city in Sonoma County and it’s only 25 miles from Napa making it an affordable option in lieu of the pricey accommodations in wine country. It’s also only 15 miles from the town of Petaluma where there is a quaint downtown with lots of shops and restaurants. Make sure if you’re in Petaluma you stop at Lombardi’s for barbecued oysters!
